Pathogenic organisms are placing an ever-increasing burden on health systems around the world, mainly due to the development of drug-resistant strains. Now more than ever there is an urgent need for the development of new strategies to combat these organisms. This presentation will discuss our efforts towards the synthesis of carbohydrates that are unique to pathogenic bacteria, most notably some 9-carbon acidic sugars referred to as nonulosonic acids, and well as elucidate the role these carbohydrates play in bacterial virulence.
