As an acknowledgement of the difficulties in completing applications due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the decision to extend the MASt programme application deadline until 15 May 2020, and the applicants will be informed of the outcome of their applications as soon as possible after that deadline. We will not consider any extra applications for the PCAS programme at this time.
Applicants should be aware that we have been advised by our logistics partner (Antarctica New Zealand) that we should plan as normal for the upcoming season, but there is the potential it is possible that the COVID-19 pandemic may has an impact on Antarctic field efforts.
Applications for the Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies (PCAS) and Master of Antarctic Studies (MASt) need to be submitted by 9 April 2020. A decision on whether your application has been successful will be made in early September.
Final acceptance into either programme is conditional upon meeting the University of Canterbury enrolment criteria, acquiring wilderness first aid certification, and passing a medical examination required by Antarctica New Zealand. The limited number of spaces available on these programmes each year means that entry into the programme is competitive. Note that the MASt is considered the preferred pathway for access and applications from students who commit to MASt are considered PCAS applications.
Students applying for other programmes of study can do so via myUC.
