Gateway Antarctica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Scholarship in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Scholarship was founded in 2001 in support of research and teaching in Antarctic Studies in recognition of Antarctica as a continent devoted to peace and research.

An application form will be available below, eight weeks before the closing date. Please complete that form when it is available. Note that this scholarship is not managed by the Scholarships Office. The Scholarships Office only advertises it on behalf of Gateway Antarctica, and is not able to answer enquiries. If you have any questions please direct them to Gateway Antarctica.

Please note that in 2020 the closing date is 31 March, which differs from that previously advertised.


PhD or master's thesis students are eligible. The scholar is required to undertake research concerning a matter of importance to the understanding of Antarctica or the Southern Ocean.
