Enterprising young students from the Canterbury region will be put on the fast track to success with the help of a little "speed mentoring" at the University of Canterbury this month.
UC's College of Business and Economics is, for the sixth year running, hosting the launch of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) in the Canterbury region.
The YES Enterprise Day (E Day) event will take place on campus on Friday 11 February.
The YES scheme is a learning experience in which senior secondary school students throughout the country form a company, become directors, develop products and services which they market and sell. The programme runs from February's E Days to awards night in November.
The scheme is an exciting and practical way for students to learn about the risks and rewards of going into business. About 350 students are expected to attend the local day-long launch event, which includes presentations by invited speakers from industry and former YES competition winners, and group sessions for students, teachers and coaches.
A highlight on the day's programme will be a speed mentoring session for the student "companies" with members of the Canterbury business community. Towards the end of the day about 40 mentors - including University staff, MBA alumni and current MBA students, and local business leaders - will spend 10 minutes with teams giving feedback on the business ideas presented.
College of Business and Economics External Relations Director Glenda Lorimer said the College was proud to continue its sponsorship of the scheme.
"It is part of our mission to support the economic development of the region and the country. Supporting YES is a central plank in our outreach strategy and is a good vehicle to show business subjects at secondary school and university have exciting, real-world application and is a vibrant area for study.
"E Day provides a fun opportunity for participants to develop their business ideas, interact with business mentors and check out the competition."
In addition to sponsoring E Day the University of Canterbury offers a $5000 YES Student of the Year Scholarship to an outstanding student director from the Canterbury competition.
