Honours for UC alumni

Fifteen University of Canterbury alumni and three former staff members have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours List announced on Monday.
Fifteen University of Canterbury alumni and three former staff members have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours List announced on Monday.
Alumnus Graeme Harrison was named one of five new Knight Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) in recognition of his service to business.
Three alumni were also made Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM): Christopher Doig for services to the arts and sport; Roger Kerr for services to business; and John Whitehead for services as Secretary to the Treasury.
Professor Emeritus Martin Devlin was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to education.
Former staff member Diedre Irons was also made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of her services to music. Ms Irons was was senior lecturer in piano at the University from 1993 to 2003.
Other former staff members to receive recognition were Dr Guy Jansen and Michael Johnson, who were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM). Dr Jansen received his MNZM for services to music and Mr Johnson received his in recognition of his services to paralympic sport. Both Dr Jansen and Mr Johnson are former staff members of the College of Education. Dr Jansen was a senior lecturer in music from 1968 to 1974 and Mr Johnson was a lecturer in physical and health education from 2000 to 2002.
Five alumni were also awarded the MNZM: Jenny Harper for services to the arts; Richard Hawke for services to pipe bands; Jennifer King for services to the Asian community; Roger Taylor for services to the arts; and Laurence Zwimpfer for services to information technology.
Five alumni received the Queen's Service Medal. They were: David Adamson (for services to the New Zealand Fire Service); Doug Clemens (for services to the community); Stephen Hamilton (for services to the community); Tom Leong (for services to the electrical community); and Grant Nelson (for services to philanthropy).
