A Canterbury University Press book exploring the little known exploits of some of the extraordinary New Zealanders who took part in the Spanish Civil War is now available in Spanish.
Kiwi Compañeros: New Zealand and the Spanish Civil War (2009) offers the first account of the role New Zealand and New Zealanders played in the war, which began as a military revolt against the Republican government of Spain in 1936 and ended with the government’s overthrow and the start of the 40-year dictatorship of General Francisco Franco in 1939.
The book was edited by writer and historian Mark Derby with a foreword by the Spanish Ambassador to New Zealand, Marcos Gomez Martinez. It has now been translated into Spanish by Cristina Gomez de la Torre Curt, who is married to Mr Gomez Martinez.
“The Ambassador was really helpful to Mark Derby when he was putting the book together and that’s how Cristina got to read it and proposed doing a translation,” said CUP Publisher Rachel Scott.
The translation has been published by the Universidad de Castilla la Mancha, which publishes a series called La Luz de la Memoria (The Light of Memory) devoted to stories and historical events about the International Brigades that participated in the Spanish Civil War.
“It was an honour to be working with the Universidad de Castilla la Mancha to sell the New Zealand story to a Spanish audience,” said Ms Scott.
Kiwi Compañeros not only tells the personal stories of New Zealanders and post-war immigrants who took part in the action in Spain but also provides accounts of those who worked for the Spanish cause in New Zealand by raising funds, lobbying politicians and spreading propaganda.
Featuring contributions from some of New Zealand’s leading writers and historians, the book draws on personal letters, recently released military documents and previously unpublished photographs.
The English version of Kiwi Compañeros can be ordered through Canterbury University Press. The Spanish translation is available online from the Centro de Estudios y Documentacion de las Brigadas Internacionales.
