UC ecologist to represent NZ at the International Union of Biological Sciences

The University of Canterbury is pleased to announce plant physiological ecologist Professor Matthew Turnbull has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the International Union of Biological Sciences.

Plant Biology Professor Matthew Turnbull will be supported by the Royal Society Te Apārangi to represent New Zealand at the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).

The University of Canterbury is pleased to announce plant physiological ecologist Professor Matthew Turnbull has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the International Union of Biological Sciences.

Matthew Turnbull is a Professor of Plant Biology and the Head of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Canterbury. He has over 25 years of experience researching, teaching and publishing in plant ecology and global change biology.

Professor Turnbull will be supported by the Royal Society Te Apārangi to represent New Zealand at the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).

Professor Turnbull is internationally recognised for his expertise in plant responses to environment. His research programme includes work on plant responses to climate, the regulation of flowering and the impacts of land management practices on greenhouse gas emissions. He has received awards for his research and teaching, and teaches courses in biological science and ecology.

His research work (over 130 publications) has been cited over 5500 times. He has served the discipline of biology in many ways, including as Head of School (since 2014), supervisor of over 30 postgraduate students, member of the Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour panel of the Royal Society Te Apārangi Marsden Fund (2001-2003, 2017), Chair of Judging Panel of Prime Minister's MacDiarmid Emerging Scientist Prize (2016-2017), associate editor for Journal of Ecology (2005-2016) and Functional Ecology (2007-2014) and President of the New Zealand Society of Plant Biologists (2005-2006).
