This was a great opportunity for the students to get to know each other and the resources available to them, as well as get into an entrepreneurial mindset.
The teams’ creations ranged from practical, including an anti-tangle headphone device, a folding laptop stand, a laser-cut wooden weekly planner, to quirky, including the ‘I have never bungy jumped’ plastic medal, created in response to a discovery that none of the students in this year’s programme have bungy jumped!
At the culmination of the challenge, we held an expo which allowed the students to sell their wares to each other in exchange for UCE money, with the team that generated the most revenue being crowned the winners! The winning team of Lucy Turner, Caitlin Buchanan, and Isabella Garbet created a ‘fridge garden’ of small magnetic pots that allow people to grow plants on their fridge door.
This week, the students will begin having one-on-one check-ins with their mentors, and several speakers will come into UCE to share their expertise with the students.
The UCE Summer Startup Programme is a chance for students to work on fast-tracking the development of their ideas into realistic business ventures for 10 weeks over the summer. To find out more about the UCE Summer Startup Programme click here.
