NZ is running out of gas - good for the climate, bad news for the economy

21 August 2024

[Opinion] The Government's plan to reverse the oil & gas ban faces investor scepticism, environmental concerns, and economic risks.

HOW TO APPLY

The coalition government's decision to reverse the ban on new oil and gas exploration aims to address NZ’s energy security due to rapidly depleting natural gas reserves. However, the move raises concerns about the environmental impact, with the MBIE estimating the decision could cause an additional 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by 2035.

Associate Professor David Dempsey, Dr Jannik Haas and Dr Rebecca Peer discuss this further on The Conversation. Read the article: NZ is running out of gas – literally. That’s good for the climate, but it’s bad news for the economy (theconversation.com)
