The Green Party MP’s resignation from parliament has exposed the alarming rise of online violence against women, especially those of colour.
This exit has emphasised the urgency for government action to create legal frameworks that support women in parliament, as the current legislation is not well equipped to deal with violence against women.
Urgent steps need to be taken to acknowledge the systemic nature of gender-based violence to protect the mental health of women in politics, as words have the power to break people and democracies.
