UC Libraries supporting Ōtautahi Pasifika secondary students

A group of over 20 students, teachers and parent helpers from Riccarton High School’s Year 10-13 Pacific Studies class paid their annual study trip to Macmillan Brown Library this week.

The collaboration with RHS is one which has been running for several years, and sees Macmillan Brown staff (led by Pacific Liaison Librarian Caroline Syddall and supported by subject librarians from across UC Libraries) help the students to find resources to answer a research assignment on topics relating to Pacific cultures.

The students’ research topics (which they chose themselves) were impressively diverse: from how to revive traditional Tongan song-writing, to the role of art in Samoan culture, and investigating the different dialects of the Māori language spoken in the Cook Islands.

The two-hour session teaches research skills and information literacy and is a chance for students to experience a university library environment.  This week, they also benefitted with a visit from Viane of the UC Pasifika Development Team, who brought UC Pasifika backpacks for the senior students.
