  • Image of the week 26 August 2019

Captain Euan Dickson’s aeroplane at Blenheim. (1st to fly from Christchurch to Wellington). Taken by Mrs R. Innes, August 30th, 1920, Muriel Bradshaw photographs (MB1056, Ref 24035). Macmillan Brown Library, Christchurch, New Zealand.

On August 25th 1920, Captain Euan Dickson completed the inaugural air crossing of Cook Strait, carrying the first air mail between the islands. The flight time between Christchurch to Upper Hutt was 4 hours, 40 minutes and was “more difficult” than crossing the English Channel according to Dickson. This image was taken on the return journey during a stop in Blenheim where the flight team were greeted by large crowds.
