Was that a bit of a rough landing?
Northcroft,G., 1931, G. Menzies biplane overturned in flax swamp, 7 January 1931. (Northcroft family around), George Northcroft photographs (MB1091, Ref 5635). Macmillan Brown Library, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Aviator Guy Menzies completed the first solo trans- Tasman flight on January 7, 1931 in 11 hours and 45 minutes.
Unfortunately he mistook a swamp for flat ground upon landing in Harihari on the West Coast.
Luckily he managed to walk away with a few grazes but unlucky in the fact that that very swamp did apparently end up as a paddock, perfect for landing!
