Formally known as Market Square or Market Place, Victoria Square once included the likes of markets, a post office, immigration barracks and a women’s prison. In 1896-7, the area was developed into a park for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubliee and the statue, unveiled in 1903, commemorates the Golden Jubilee of the founding of the Canterbury Settlement and is a memorial for soldiers killed in the South African War.
