Blackball is a small town in the West Coast. It was named after an old English Company called "Blackball Shipping Line". For a small town, there are a number of remarkable books about Blackball at Macmillan Brown Library. The town was known for its strong union's movement. Perhaps it was not a surprise it became the birth place for New Zealand Labour Party. 9110 Image credit: Howitt, G., n.d., First passenger train in Blackball, The Gordon Howitt West Coast Historic Photograph Collection (MB1072, Ref 9110).
