SELECT '16 is the eighth occurrence of the annual Select exhibition, which is run by the University of Canterbury Art Acquisitions Committee. The exhibition supports final year visual arts practitioners studying at the School of Fine Arts by acquiring examples of their work for the University's permanent art collection. To date, 23 works have been acquired for the collection via Select. Final year students both undergraduate and postgraduate are invited to submit one work to the Art Acquisitions Committee, who make pre-selections for the exhibition opening at 5.00pm on Tuesday 8 November. This year 33 students submitted works and from this initial group 15 have been chosen as exhibiting finalists. The UC Art Acquisitions Committee acquires a maximum of three pieces for its permanent collection from those artworks in the exhibition. An external judge makes this final decision; this year's judge is Simon Rees, Director at the Govett-Brewster Gallery, New Plymouth.
