Yum! West Coast Whitebait Season starts today, September 1st. Just look at how much bait this gentleman has to sort!



This picture was taken at the Nolan Brothers Whitebait Canning Factory in Okuru, South Westland which was established in 1928 and regularly freighted whitebait to Christchurch and further afield until it closed in 1952. Ref: Te Ara

Nowadays, whitebait are in decline, mostly due to the degradation of their habitat. However, there is still enough for a delicious whitebait pattie with a dash of lemon juice, mmm! And if you fancy catching your own supper, here are the regulations: DOC Whitebait Regulations
