Meet in the foyer of the Staff Club
The University of Canterbury Staff Club Art collection comprises of almost sixty art works by some of New Zealand’s most prominent artists (among others, Doris Lusk, Don Peebles, Bill Sutton, Olivia Spencer-Bower, and Gordon Walters). Many of the works were acquired between 1961 and 1984; the majority being purchased through group shows at the Canterbury Society of Arts during the 1960s and 1970s.
As part of her Postgraduate Diploma in Art Curatorship, Rachel McAuley has been conducting research into the collection and will be giving a guided tour of the art works on display in the newly refurbished Staff Club on Friday at 5.30pm. This is a unique opportunity to find out more about this significant collection.
The Staff Club was formed in 1929 as the Senior Common Room, when the University was much smaller and occupied the town site. With the move out to Ilam, the old Ilam Homestead was made available for this purpose in 1971. It has recently reopened after extensive renovation.

Doris Lusk, Mountains at Lake Tekapo, 1971
