US National Digital Newspaper Program
Started in 2005, the project will, over a period of 20 years, digitise historically significant US newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. The database is freely available via Chronicling America and there are currently over 5.2 million pages online. Advanced search lets you narrow your search by State, Newspaper and specify a date range. This is a valuable resource for researchers with very good image quality. As well as providing an insight into the social, political and cultural life of America, there are also interesting personal accounts of events, like this evocative description of the San Francisco earthquake from Professor George Davidson at UCLA in the Minneapolis Journal (19th April 1906), it was ‘like a terrier shaking a rat’. We can relate to that in Christchurch.
