Of particular note in the James Hight Library is W.A. Sutton’s The Four Seasons – Summer,1970.
Located on Level 2 on the wall just outside the Self-Loan Area, this painting belongs to The Four Seasons, (1968-1970) a major series in Sutton’s artistic career.
Autumn is held at Te Papa, Winter at the Christchurch Art Gallery, and Spring at the Christchurch Club.
Preeminent portrait and landscape artist William A. Sutton (1917-2000) is often associated with the history and tradition of Canterbury regionalism. There are 18 works by Sutton in the UC art collection, including numerous portraits of academics, several landscapes, 3 watercolour paintings and 15 life or figure studies in charcoal and pencil. Sutton enrolled at the Canterbury College School of Art for weekend classes in 1930 while he was still a schoolboy, and completed a Diploma in Fine Arts in 1937. After two brief stints teaching part-time, Sutton returned to teach full-time at the school from 1949-1979. One of Sutton’s life studies dates from his time as a postgraduate student at the CCSA in 1938.
