Friday Free Stuff: Historic maps

18 May 2012

New York Public Library has a Map Warper, a tool to digitally align historic maps to today's more precise standards. Their website encourages visitors to use this tool on their collection of (primarily New York) maps.

The David Rumsey Map Collection has over 30,000 items (especially rare 18th and 19th century maps) available online under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike license. They can be searched and viewed through a variety of methods including the "LUNA browser" - as an example see their maps of New Zealand.

And for historic maps especially of Christchurch, see the Christchurch City Libraries collection digitised from several library and archival collections - you can browse either thumbnails or the title list to access these. Each map indicates its copyright status and usage rights.
