Borrowing
Members of the public are welcome to visit the UC Libraries and browse our collections. Non staff and students are also welcome to visit Macmillan Brown Library and request to view items within the library.
To borrow material, you must be registered with the Library. You must present a current Canterbury Card, ULANZ institution card, or external borrower card. Most staff and students of the University of Canterbury are automatically eligible to become borrowers, including approved academic visitors.
Exceptions to borrowing include UC employees on casual contracts, some visitor classes, culturally enrolled students and some UC Opportunity students.
What can I borrow?
Undergraduate students (including Honours level, distance, and UC Star students)
Undergraduate students can borrow a total of 50 items at the same time, with restrictions on some types of items as in the table below.
- The normal loan period per item is 28 days but this is subject to recall.
- The normal loan period for undergraduate distance students is 32 days, also subject to recall.

Research students
Prospective PhD students will obtain access to information resources and Library materials once their application for enrolment is complete.
Research students can borrow a total of 75 items at the same time. There are restrictions on some types of items as in the table below.
- The normal loan period per item is 60 days, but this is subject to recall.

Staff
Staff can borrow a total of 100 items at the same time. There are restrictions on some types of items as in the table below.

External members
