UC is here to support you - discover all of the online services available to you, including academic support, e-learning resources, online mentoring – all readily accessible to you from where ever you are studying.

Have you completed your enrolment?

Before you join Online Orientation, it is important that you are first fully enrolled at UC. Just follow the easy steps to enrolment to make sure you have completed your enrolment at UC. 

Online Orientation Semester One, 2023

UC’s Online Orientation is a series of workshops hosted live via zoom. It is mandatory for all brand new to UC, first year students commencing their studies with UC, we run the sessions a week prior to semester starting.

It is an important way to prepare yourself to start university, and learn how to access the UC resources and support services available to you, including e-learning tools, smart strategies and contacts at your college and of course meeting other online students.

If you have any questions about the online orientation reach out to Candice Houghton ( Closer to the date, you will be sent communications with the zoom registration links and other information so you will be ready for the semester.  However, for now please keep a note of the following dates in your calendar. 

  • Day One, Wednesday 15 February 2023 3pm to 5pm NZST
  • Day Two, Thursday 16 February, 2023. 3pm to 5pm NZST.

For our continuing online UC students you are welcome to drop in for a refresher to any of the sessions. 




LEARN will make your life easier while studying at UC - LEARN is the online platform we use to enable teachers to manage their teaching and students to manage your learning. You can log in to your course’s LEARN site anytime from anywhere to access resources (documents, presentations, audio and video files) and activities (online discussions, quizzes, assignment submission boxes and workshops) set up by your lecturer.

UC Puna | Library

UC has an extensive range of Distance services for our online students. The Library can provide you with access to e-books, articles, and audiovisual material. Each Faculty have dedicated subject specialist or use our AskLIVE service for individual help, with extended operating hours. 


MyUC is the main student portal for enrolling new or returning students, changing your courses, viewing your internal transcript, update your personal details and access other UC systems including LEARN, My Timetable, Canterbury Card, Library and IT.

Zoom is currently the preferred method for video conferencing. UC has a site license for Zoom, which means it is free for all UC students. Before you can use Zoom, you must install the Zoom software for your device. Here are some steps for you to set up your Zoom:

  • Start by going to and click Download in the header menu.
  • Once installed, click the Sign In button.
  • Click Sign In with SSO.
  • Enter your company domain, type Canterbury and click Continue.
  • You may be taken to the UC Login screen where you can log in with your UC username and password. Be sure to use the format
  • Join the meeting by using the link provided by the host/lecturer or type in the Meeting ID/Personal Link Name.

Zoom is supported by UC IT Services. You can log a ticket with the IT Service Desk if you require help getting set up for the first time, or if you require a video conference to be scheduled. You can also visit Zoom Support Help Centre to find help.

WeChat & WhatsApp

You can easily download both of these messenger applications on Google Play or Apple Store. We will send you a QR code and link via email to welcome you to the group chats closer to the start of semester two.  


Student Advice

If you need course advice for your study at UC, our Student Advisors are here to help and offer advice on:

  • Degree planning, including double degrees and double majors; Explaining your course options
  • Understanding the University calendar and regulations
  • Explaining eligibility to graduate
  • Transferring credit; Cross-crediting; Transferring between degrees
  • Approval of entry to courses and degrees
  • Exemptions, such as waivers of prerequisites or core requirements
  • Withdrawal from courses
  • Suspensions; Extensions; Appeals

Academic skills centre

The Academic Skills Centre (ASC) is a free advisory service and resource hub that focuses on writing and study strategies to maximise student achievement at all levels from first-year through to PhD. You can find a range of useful online workshops and seminars including academic writing, language support, avoiding plagiarism and how to deliver academic presentations. See more resources from ASC

UC Library

UC Library is here to support your learning, teaching and research. Search and access our online resources. UC Library provides some key online services:

  • AskLive is UC Library's instant messaging service. You can chat with them by entering your question in the box. The chat service is available at 8.30-20.30 on weekdays and 10.30-20.30 at weekends.
  • Subject Librarians are specialists who can show you how to access online and print information resources for your subjects. Further, they are able to help you improve your academic writing as well as your assignment performance. Feel free to make an appointment through email and get in touch with them over Zoom if you have any academic-related issues.
  • The online database is important for your assignment as you might be required to do academic research. This link provided by the library includes the most frequently used databases that you will be using while doing your assignment. You can also use Google scholar to find relevant journals or articles by entering keywords.
  • UC library also runs a range of online academic workshops, see the workshops calendar here


Student Care 

The Student Care team is a great support system that you can use to seek guidance or advice on various types of issues such as academic, financial, accommodation and overall well-being. The services are free and available for all domestic and international students, including distance students. You can book an appointment with Student Care and inform them that you would prefer a virtual meeting via Zoom. Alternatively, you can email with your inquiry. Appointments during standard NZ office hours (9am - 4.30pm). If you have immediate health and wellbeing concerns, please contact your local health professionals. 


UCSA & UCSA Advocacy and Welfare team

UCSA represents the student body at UC and focuses on supporting students to succeed and creating a sense of belonging at UC. They provide a range of student-focused services including advocacy and welfare, subsidized dental and optometry, early learning centres, club support, events, media, cafes and bars. To encourage student's involvement in clubs and associations, UCSA organises the International Welcome and Club’s day at the beginning of every semester.

The UCSA Advocacy and Welfare team are also here to support you in many ways. They offer all enrolled UC students access to free and confidential services, which are completely independent of the University. Online Mentoring Programme @UC

Support for our online students doesn’t stop after Orientation. You’ll be part of the UC community, with an online student mentoring and support programme designed to ensure you’re able to build connections at UC and reach out for guidance throughout the semester. The University of Canterbury runs two mentoring programmes for our online students:

Tūhono is for students of The School of Business. Students will receive information directly from the School of Business regarding the mentoring programme. If you have any questions reach out to Micky Lu (
Tūhono ā-Ipurangi is for students of the following Faculty's: Engineering, Science, Arts and Education, Health and Human Development.

If you are new to online study with UC, enrolled in first year courses, and studying online (outside of New Zealand) you will be automatically be added to the UC Tūhuno or UC Tūhono a-Ipurangi (online peer mentoring) programme during your first semester of study. This is compulsory if you are new to online learning

Reach-out connections

During the semester, you will receive a phone call, text or email from one of our UC Student Online Mentors via WhatsApp or WeChat. These connections are a chance for you to be in contact with another student at UC on campus, ask questions and receive guidance on support services and learn more about student life at UC from a peer. 

Connect Sessions 

The UC Online Mentors will run Zoom group sessions with a small group of offshore online students during the semester. All online students will be allocated to a mentoring group early in the semester.

• Your mentor will email you a Zoom link and information to join the session. We strongly encourage all of our online students to join these informative and interactive sessions aimed at building your online peer community, learning a bit more about New Zealand and giving you the chance to ask any questions you may have, big or small!
• The first session ‘Move-in Day’ will be scheduled within the first two weeks of classes.
• All new and returning online students will be part of these Connect Sessions.

Continuing Student support past first semester

If you have already completed at least one semester online you can choose whether you wish to continue being supported by an on-campus student mentor. Complete the form here and we'll get back to you with more information about the programme.

We as a default always include you in the group chats, email notices, invite you to online social events, academic workshops, and you will receive a call each semester to keep you up to date with the UC Online community.
