About HIT Lab NZ

HIT Lab NZ aims to support and empower people through the study, invention, development, and dissemination of technologies. We engage with real-world problems and have a positive global impact.

Our work at HIT Lab NZ provides people with cutting edge technological solutions to enhance their work and daily life. We put people first by looking at the tasks they are trying to accomplish, and producing state-of-the-art outcomes by adding an appropriate mix of technology.

We are a multidisciplinary, innovative group which consistently produces high caliber research and development. Since 2002 we have focused on utilizing new and emerging technologies such as VR, AR, remote collaboration, and applied immersive game design. Our research explores how people use these technologies in order to better understand cognition, perception, and human behaviour. The quality research we have produced has revolutionised how people interact with technology and established the HIT Lab NZ as a forerunner in the Human Interface Technology field.

Goals

We aim to:

  • Provide multi-disciplinary project-based learning experiences for students
  • Create a world-class centre of excellence for human interface technology research
  • Develop and transition to industry leading-edge human-computer interfaces to accelerate economic development in New Zealand

How We Are Meeting Our Goals

The HIT Lab NZ offers PhD and Master’s programmes in Human Interface Technology which integrate research and education, providing students with a project-based learning environment.

Staff and students can work on their own initiatives or on industry and faculty-driven projects, all of which have the potential to result in real commercial products. At the Lab, students can undertake projects as part of their studies or as an extracurricular activity, such as an internship.

The HIT Lab NZ engages in projects with national and international industrial, academic and governmental partners.
