Qualifications
Overview
Palliative care has emerged as a speciality that incorporates inter professional health care provision for people who are living with and dying from active, progressive diseases or conditions that are not responsive to curative treatment.
Palliative care embraces the physical, social, emotional and spiritual elements of well-being (tinana, whanau, hinengaro, and wairua) and embraces a person’s quality of life while they are dying. This field involves people throughout the life span from children through to the elderly and continues on to support the bereaved whānau.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Palliative Care develops health practitioners' skills in palliative care and introduces palliative care as a research field. It comprises two courses and can be started in Semester 1 or 2.
The Palliative Care endorsement of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences, the Postgraduate Diploma of Health Sciences, the Master of Health Sciences, and the Master of Health Sciences Professional Practice will prepare students in Palliative Care so that they can be employable and/or provide leadership in Palliative Care within Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. This specialist endorsement starts in February (Semester 1).
- Postgraduate Certificate in Palliative Care – two years part-time
- Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences – 12 months full-time, part-time options available
- Master of Health Sciences Professional Practice – 18 months full-time, part-time options available
- Master of Health Sciences – 24 months full-time, part-time options available.
Postgraduate Certificate in Palliative Care - This 60-point programme has two courses HLTH448 The Foundation of Hospice Palliative Care and HLTH449 Praxis in Hospice Palliative Care.
Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences – This is a 120-point programme generally consisting of 60 points of compulsory courses and a further 60 points from the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences Schedule.
Master of Health Sciences Professional Practice – This is a 180-point, professionally focused, coursework-based Master's degree. Following completion of the courses listed below (totalling 120 points), HLTH 463 Whanau and Community Health and HLTH 464 Research Approaches for Health are compulsory courses which are completed in Semester 1 of your second year.
Master of Health Sciences – This is a 240-point, research-focused Master's degree. Part I consists of 120 points from the table below and should include a 30 point research methods course, preferably HLTH 464 Research Approaches for Health. This is required prior to completing Part II, HLTH 690 MHealSc Thesis (120 points).
