After a great experience studying abroad in Germany with her high school, Diana was excited at the prospect of another study abroad opportunity through Texas Christian University (Texas, USA).

‘I loved the idea that I share the English language with another country, but our cultures are very different. I also love the outdoors and was told by many people that New Zealand was one of the most beautiful countries they have ever been to.’

Studying Movement Science and Physiotherapy back at home, Diana was able to take UC courses in Sport Coaching and Physical Education to contribute to her studies.

‘It is nice that UC offers a variety of courses that will count towards my major. It was great to actually practice what we were talking about in class,’ she says.

‘My most interesting course was TEPE 112. I enjoyed learning about the history of NZ. Being a study abroad student who loves to tramp, I enjoyed learning about the ethics side of hiking.’

As an added bonus, Diana also took the internship course ARTS 295 with the UC Centre for Entrepreneurship.

‘I was placed in the Incubator Programme. It helps students develop and pursue their own startup businesses, gain entrepreneurial skills, and meet other entrepreneurs. I attended multiple Incubator meetings and workshops to learn and develop entrepreneurial skills. I also met up with different people who were experts in their field (psychology, business, personal training, physiotherapy) to further develop my own business idea.’

Diana has really enjoyed her academic experiences at UC, but UC’s social side was a highlight of coming to New Zealand.

‘While at UC, you should get involved with UC clubs and activities,’ she says. ‘I played for UC Basketball for the semester. Getting involved with clubs is a great way to gain some Kiwi friends and to try something new.

‘UC also offers some really great travel experiences through the tramping club, the kayak club, and SVA (Student Volunteer Army). I highly recommend going on a trip with a UC club or organisation so you can experience what it is like to travel with Kiwis and fellow Kiwi students. I really enjoyed going on a hike to Mt. Somers with the tramping club and going to Marlborough Sounds for SVA Camp.’

All in all, her experiences here have been life changing, and helped solidify her options for a future career at home.

‘It has made me realize what my dreams for my career are,’ she says. ‘I added a Business minor because of my internship.

‘I would love to become a physiotherapist and my internship has also helped me figure out my career dream to eventually own my own performance enhancement centre, that combines a gym and a physiotherapy clinic.’
