Choosing to study Marketing at university was a simple choice for Fraser, saying he has always wanted to ‘understand business and consumer psychology’.

‘I have always wanted to start my own business, and therefore have attempted to obtain those skills that are required to be successful at achieving this goal,’ he says. ‘Through my bachelor’s degree I was able to gain an understanding of the business world.’

Following advice from friends who were also planning to study business, UC was the best option to follow his passions.

‘I had confidence in UC’s Business School, especially in Marketing. UC has high quality lecturers that provoke thought and get the best out of you as an individual. I would recommend it to anyone studying Commerce in New Zealand.’

Fraser then went onto the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA), a programme providing the opportunity for students with no previous accounting experience to learn professional accounting skills, including membership with the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ).

‘Deciding to study the MPA was an easy choice. The MPA was an obvious postgraduate opportunity, which allowed me to really consolidate my business knowledge and education. I believed it would enhance my knowledge in business and contribute significantly to landing a job after my studies.’

Fraser particularly enjoyed how his study reflects the real world industry.

‘I enjoyed understanding theory, ideas and models, which are easily relatable to real world situations. Because at the end of the day, it’s about how and where we will use our degree once we finish. I enjoyed discussing the current events and economics of the world. Thus I enjoyed applying skills I have obtained both in my undergraduate BCom and the MPA to understand these issues and propose solutions.’

Fraser had also been boosting his career chances by taking advantage of UC’s support services.

‘Student services make preparing for the workforce easy, with CV checks, interview advice as well as Career Fairs. Clubs day and USCA club events are awesome, which allow an opportunity to wind down after exams and on weekends.

‘I was on the UC Accounting Society Executive and loved contributing to this. I was also a Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia Student Ambassador for 2014 which involves the promotion of CPA information and brand.’

Having now completed the MPA programme, Fraser launched into a role with Walker Davey Searells accounting firm that he has thoroughly enjoyed so far.

Fraser strongly advises Commerce students to make the most of their university experiences, as they will contribute to even more in the future.

‘Take the opportunities that faculty setup for Commerce students, such as networking events and employers visits and always apply for internships, they are gold when applying for graduate jobs.’
