'The tranquil and friendly environment of Christchurch has an influence on the people who live and study here...'

Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Civil Engineering

Structural Engineer, Auckland Council

Ben’s professional background in Engineering and Management sparked his interest for further studies in New Zealand.

‘I had completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Management in China, and then a Postgraduate qualification in Commerce at Lincoln University. After this, I was seeking for a way to settle in New Zealand and believed that Education can change my life, which led me to embark studies at UC,’ he says.

‘I choose UC as it the best university for Engineering and is renowned for Structural and Civil Engineering; what’s more it is a Washington Accord-accredited qualification which is highly recognised internationally.’

Ben says the best thing about UC is the support he received during the course of his degree.

‘The staff and facilities are awesome. At UC you can easily approach the academic staff for discussion of your study. I believe the tranquil and friendly environment of Christchurch has an influence on the people who live and study here.’

Ben was awarded the Summer Research Scholarship in 2011 and again in 2012. The scholarship offered him the opportunity to practice research skills under supervision from research project leaders.

During his final year of study, Ben was a Teaching Assistant for the College of Engineering and a co-author of a research article.

‘The research I co-authored was published in the Pacific Structural Steel Conference, titled Post-Fire Hysteretic Behaviour of Asymmetrical Friction Connection. All these experiences have enriched me for my career development,’ he says.

Ben counsels future Engineering students to ‘make a plan for your study early on; a plan will help sustain your passion and interest during the course of your study’.

As a successful UC graduate, Ben has been employed at Auckland Council as a Structural Engineer.

‘My job responsibilities entail structural assessment for building consent application for the whole Auckland region. I also provide advisory for the Auckland Council Regulatory Engineering, including auditing applicants engineering design, product compliance, and Auckland council policy.

‘I have been involved in many interesting projects, including The Pacifica in Auckland CBD (57 levels high rise building), Union Green Apartment also in Auckland CBD (153 units), and numbers of blocks of Housing New Zealand development.

‘Structural engineering is a lifelong study programme. I continue attending seminars, conferences, and training courses organised by Engineering New Zealand, Auckland structural Group, SECOS.

‘UC study has provided me with a solid foundation to support my job and has taught me ethical principles,’ he says.

Having arrived into New Zealand as an international student and now succeeding as a working professional, Ben continues to enjoy his New Zealand lifestyle.

‘It is a wonderful journey and I believe your efforts will be rewarded in the long run. I have lived in Christchurch for 9 years and the simple lifestyle and trustful relationships I’ve made have develop strong moral values.

‘If you are new to New Zealand, embrace the culture and think positive. There is always opportunity if you keep trying.’
