Bachelor of Forestry Science with Honours

Operations Supervisor, PF Olsen

Arriving at UC from his native Northland to study Forestry Science, Sam found he had no problems settling into a successful four years at university.

'UC has a great student culture,' he says. 'There are plenty of sport and recreational groups that you can join, and I really liked the fact that there were so many other out-of-town students alongside me. The University and its staff provide great support.'

With the degree consisting of statistical and economics-based courses, environmental and forestry science courses, and forest management courses that cover things like harvesting and roading, Sam feels he has a lot to offer as a graduate and in return gets great job satisfaction.

'The School of Forestry's practical focus has enabled me to be a useful member of a professional team,' he says, advising others:

'It's best not to limit yourself to one aspect of the industry while you study. The more individual aspects you know, the better you can bring different fields of the business together and achieve more as a whole.'

For the same reason, Sam says he is enjoying working in a small team at PF Olsen as it gives him exposure to all parts of the business, rather than specialising in one area, building on that broad-based foundation he got with his degree.

'I plan to stay here for a while and keep learning more and more, then hopefully I can begin to move up the forestry management ladder.'

Like many Forestry students, Sam was attracted by the mix of office-based and outdoor elements a career in the industry would offer.

'I love that, as an operations supervisor, I am able to get out into the field most days to manage the various operations which are going on all over the stunning Nelson/Tasman districts.'
