'In Civil Engineering, you get opportunities to create things and solve problems every day...'

Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Civil Engineering

Coming to UC from China, Ruofan’s ‘work hard, play hard’ attitude has led to a great deal of success in his Civil Engineering studies so far, and he looks forward to a bright future ahead of him.

‘I want to be a consulting civil engineer in the future, and if possible I would like to have my own company. UC provides me with the best educational resources, and its reputation in engineering and academic level are impressive. I am getting an excellent education that I can turn into an amazing career.’

This passion for his study comes from a genuine enjoyment and interest in the tasks he gets to undertake not only during his time with UC, but also the significant role that civil engineering plays in everyday life.

‘Civil engineers design, construct and manage a wide range of projects and infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, dams, roads and railways. This provides people with a reliable, safe, sustainable and modern environment to live in. In Civil Engineering, you get opportunities to create things and solve problems every day, I enjoy being challenged!’

Another challenge that Ruofan has taken on during his time at UC is his involvement as part of the UC Chinese Students and Scholars Society (UCCSSS), an aspect of his UC life that has been a rewarding and educational experience.

‘I am the secretary, and my role is involved in almost everything. From managing our budget and training new exec members, to negotiating with our sponsor and other UC clubs. My favourite thing about being involved with UCCSSS is the opportunity to make new friends every day.

‘It is the cultural diversity and freedom that I experience here at UC that really impresses me. People in New Zealand are very friendly, and I’ve had the chance to meet many different people with various cultural backgrounds, which is exciting!’

Outside of his busy schedule, which he fondly refers to as ‘the 3S’’ (study, sleep and social), Ruofan has extended his talents into writing and creating content, something that has now become a part-time job.

‘As part of my job I help a New Zealand health food company “Pure Kiwi” to promote their products to China, as well as writing articles for local Chinese media “Elegant Christchurch”. I also assist staff at UC with the operation of Chinese social media channels such as WeChat, using these to reach out to potential and current Chinese students.

‘During my free time, I enjoying listening to music and playing the drums as part of a band I have formed. I also love staying active at the gym, and both playing and watching basketball, I am a big Golden State Warriors fan!’
