Benefits of UC Pathways

This course is available to students from all disciplines and will help you learn critical thinking, academic reading, writing and research skills while discovering all the facilities the University of Canterbury has to offer.

UC Pathways is a project unique to New Zealand in adding an additional level of coordinated support for students. UC used international research to design a structure that is most likely to improve your success and enhance your experience at University.

UC Pathways intentionally builds a solid foundation of skills, attributes and social networks necessary for success in later levels of degree study.

UC Pathways course

The importance of time management, good health and future planning are taught alongside contemporary topics and related readings. Small classes, group work and guest lecturers encourage in-depth discussion, with participation in campus events as part of the course.

Combining academic and more personal skills, this course promises not only the development of academic skills but a better understanding of what it takes and means to get your degree from UC.

The UC Pathways course is ENGL117 Writing the Academic Essay.

Additional tutorial time has been set aside for UC Pathways activities.

My Academic Pathway

As a new UC Pathways student you will be interviewed to gain a picture of your educational background and past experience to help us jointly formulate a personalised academic pathway through your first year.

Combining your goals with a picture of your strengths, influences and motivations, provides a living document that can be revisited and reviewed throughout the course of your studies.

Peer Learning

To facilitate learning with your peers you can choose to be in a cohort of students with similar backgrounds. These groupings will be explained at your interview.
