Naming of buildings

Ngāi Tuahuriri have shared their stories with Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury through the naming of various buildings and places of significance around campus. The names help to create our distinctiveness in a way that reflects both the ideology of the University and also the mana of the Tūāhuriri, Ngāi Tahu and Māori as part of a global community.

For Ngāi Tūāhuriri, stories lay the foundations of their world, teaching them about themselves and their connection to Papatūānuku (mother earth), to Ranginui (sky father) and to all creatures.

A selection of these stories has been embedded into the Campus Master Plan through the Cultural narrative. As with all good stories, there are embellishments and a degree of supernaturalness - find them here
