New Music Central: Songs of Politics, Power & Protest

As a follow on from 2019's hugely popular Modern Art Song concert, Christchurch vocalists Jennine Bailey, Zara Ballara & Naomi Ferguson have joined forces once again to present our first concert of 2020. Join these well-loved vocalists and accompanists Tom Rainey, Iola Shelley & Alex van den Broek as they present a programme of songs about debate, protest, struggle and fighting the power!

Jennine Bailey is a name synonymous with style and individuality in the New Zealand jazz and adult contemporary music worlds. She has headlined sold-out shows nationwide many times during her career, and has performed alongside such luminaries as Ray Wolf, Roger Fox, Midge Marsden, Whirimako Black, Hollie Smith, Stu Buchanan, Tom Rainey and Doug Caldwell. Jennine has a Master of Arts in Music and teaches contemporary vocals at the University of Canterbury. She is the proud recipient of the 2012 Malcom Tait Scholarship in Music Education.

Zara Ballara was born in Christchurch and has returned after 16 years living, performing and teaching in London. She began her formal studies at Victoria University with Emily Mair. She was the first performance student to graduate there with a Master’s Degree in singing. She completed her postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and represented the school at several International events including Opera Montepulciano in conjunction with Hochschule für Musik, Köln. Zara is currently Voice Co-ordinator at Canterbury University.

An accomplished musician, Naomi Ferguson has performed at national and local festivals and also at international venues in Korea, Hong Kong and The Netherlands. She has a Masters in Fine Arts, and First Class Honours in Performance Voice from UC. Recent highlights include performing the role Killer Queen for Showbiz Christchurch’s production of WE WILL ROCK YOU, and co-creating and performing in FREE RADICALS for WORD Christchurch 2018.
