This concert will bring percussionists from the UC-Christchurch Youth Orchestra together with percussionists from UC to celebrate an evening of beautiful noise. The concert features a selection of pieces that demonstrate the very wide dynamic range of percussion—from the almost inaudible whispering pianissimo to thundering drumming and jubilant sounds of percussion at full force.
Director Justin DeHart promises it will be a spectacular experience: “We will literally be making rain!”, he says in reference to the 16-person New Zealand premiere of Michael Pisaro’s Ricefall which uses rice, instead of mallets or hands, to activate various sounding objects.
Other notable pieces on the programme include the classic percussion composition Ostinato Pianisso by Henry Cowell featuring Reuben Painter on xylophone, and Louis Andriessien’s Workers Union, a symphonic movement for any loud sounding of instruments.
N.B This concert is presented at a different venue that other School of Music concerts, the Aldersgate Centre.
