  • transporting bulk electricity from where it is generated (by companies like Meridian Energy and Mighty River Power) to cities, towns and some major industrial users (like New Zealand Steel)
  • connecting with smaller lines companies (like Vector) who package and deliver that power to the doorsteps of New Zealand's homes and businesses
  • managing New Zealand's power system (as the System Operator) so that electricity is delivered whenever and wherever needed, 24/7.

MainPower has been distributing electricity to the North Canterbury region for almost 100 years. We deliver electricity to over 42,000 homes and businesses via 5,121 kilometres of overhead lines and underground cables, across a geographic area of 11,180 square kilometres. Our network area spans from north of the Waimakariri River, through the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts to Kaikōura.

The MainPower team is made up of around 160 dedicated field and office-based staff, spread between three depots in Rangiora (head office), Culverden and Kaikoura.

Network Tasman


Network Tasman owns and operates the electricity distribution network in the wider Nelson and Tasman areas, excluding Nelson Electricity's supply area in Nelson city. Our distribution network distributes power to approximately 40,000 consumer connections in an area of 10,800 km2 in the northwestern corner of the South Island. Network Tasman itself is wholly owned by the Network Tasman Trust.



Northpower operates and maintains both the electricity distribution and fibre networks in the Whangarei and Kaipara region with more than 60,000 connected customers. We also operate an electricity generation (hydro) plant at Wairua in Northland.

We provide specialist contracting services to our partners - other network owners and operators - across the North Island of New Zealand. This includes innovative inspection network services, inspection technologies and electrical contracting services (distribution, transmission, fibre and gas).

We helped establish Whangarei as New Zealand's first ultra-fast broadband city and have over 22,000 customers connected to our fibre network across Whangarei and Kaipara.
