Chemical, Natural and Healthcare Product Formulation

  • Product design process
  • Physical properties of formulated products
  • Chemical properties of formulated products
  • Functional properties of formulated products
  • Methods of analysis
  • Commercial production
  • Testing
  • Process economics

This degree promotes interdisciplinary innovation.  For example, Chemical, Natural & Healthcare Product Formulation combined with electives from Biochemistry will create more natural products.

Formulation chemists need to be:

  • creative problem solvers
  • methodical and accurate
  • patient and adaptable
  • able to work well under pressure
  • good at managing projects
  • good at analysis
  • good communicators.

University Entrance through NCEA, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge International Examinations - for more information see the Admission and University Entrance page.

At least 14 credits in Level 2 NCEA Science and Mathematics strongly recommended (have passed AS level Mathematics in CIE or have achieved a 4 SL Maths for IB), while those intending to take the Chemical & Healthcare Product Formulation major should ideally have 14 credits in Level 3 NCEA Chemistry (IB Chemistry with 4 HL or 6 SL; CIE Chemistry D grade (A level) or A grade (AS level).

NCEA credits in related subjects such as Digital Technologies, Technology, or Design and Visual Communication would be an advantage.

Formulation chemists are needed not only in the innovator and generic pharmaceutical industries products, but also for all sorts of chemical products including cosmetics, fragrances, paints, foods, adhesives, and many  household products.
