Reactive materials are nanolayered or particle composites that generate large amounts of energy and high temperatures (1000oC to 3000oC) when they mix to form stable compounds or oxides, as shown below for Al and Ni. Here we will explore their use in basic scientific studies and in commercial applications. In the first part of the presentation we will review ex situ and in situ experimental observations of these rapid phase transformations, their ignition thresholds, and their propagation rates, and we will learn how they depend on reactant spacing, reactant properties, and reaction heats. In the second part of the presentation we explore two applications of reactive materials. One is the use of free-standing multilayer foils as local heat sources for soldering and brazing. In this case, the NanoFoilTM product (shown below) and its commercialization will be described. The second application involves the use of Al-Mg-Zr composite powders for defeating bio-agents such as Anthrax. For both cases, we will consider the impact of chemistry and geometry on the initiation and combustion of the reactive composites and we will review their performance in the given applications.
