Computational modelling of fluid flow in rock fractures

Geothermal reservoir is a complex subterranean geological formation containing high temperature, pressurised fluid and permeable, fractured rock formation that allows fluid flow and recirculation. Over time, geothermal reservoir loses its pressure and temperature, which may allow dissolved minerals to precipitate, creating a much rougher surface in the reservoir and limiting the performance of the plant as scaling and erosion worsen. Two approaches of a computational modelling of rock fractures intersection provides a more fundamental understanding in the fluid dynamics behind the geological phenomenon. Modelling two fractures intersecting one another may unlock the ability to model the entire fracture network with a much practical method. The fracture intersection is of interest. The model uses an electric circuit analogy, where the fracture intersection can be thought of as an electrical resistance in a much broader network. Investigation into the effect of changing the intersection parameters provides a further insight into the reservoir modelling.
