Per aspera ad astra: reaching for the stars via research and adventure

Dr Sarah Kessans

Department of Biological Sciences University of Canterbury

Time & Place

Fri, 05 Apr 2019 13:00:00 NZDT in Link 309 Lecture Theatre

Plant biology and biochemistry aren't usually the first topics that come to mind when discussing space exploration, but as the space industry diversifies beyond launch and satellite technologies to providing longterm life support for humans living off our home planet, these fields will become increasingly more important. Sarah's previous research on plant-based vaccine development and the production of high-value
compounds in filamentous fungi, combined with space-themed inspiration strengthened during the 2017 NASA Astronaut Candidate selection process, have led her to initiate several astrobiology projects here at UC. Come along to learn about Sarah's vision for using biological research to create solutions for supporting life off of the Earth.
