Postdoctoral FellowArun Kumar Manickavasagam
Fascination of flights led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology including an internship involving the study of wrinkling behaviour in airships at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in India. Then, a PhD scholarship combined with my passion for cricket made me gravitate to New Zealand in 2014 in which I pursued a fundamental topic involving modelling the fluid dynamics in an array of beams immersed in fluids having applications in the world of atomic force microscopy. My versatility has led me to my current role as a post-doctoral fellow within the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering in which I am involved with the Can construct NZ team – a collaboration between different universities in NZ solving the capacity and capability problems in the construction sector.
I have also balanced my academic interests with my other passions – scoring cricket games at all levels and founded a chess club “UChess” on campus in 2016 which is successfully running in its 5th year now. In my spare time, I also tutor students (all ranges) on an individual basis having taught mathematics at University of Canterbury International College (UCIC) for two years.
Other interests include learning new languages, running marathons for fun, traveling, reading books and exploring new cultures.
