Margaret Orbell was the author of eight previous books on Polynesian tradition, literature and belief, including The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Maori Myth and Legend, a finalist in the 1996 Montana New Zealand Book Awards. After retiring from her position as Associate Professor of Maori at the University of Canterbury she became a full-time writer.
