A world of possibilities

Teaching offers a creative, stimulating and rewarding career in which you can influence and shape many lives - both in New Zealand and overseas.

Global citizens, global learners

An understanding and appreciation of other cultures is invaluable in our increasingly multicultural society, and teaching offers opportunities to explore other cultures and education systems while you study.

Some of our students undertake their school placements outside New Zealand, including in the Pacific Islands and Australia. Talk to us to find out what's possible.

Great international work opportunities

A teaching qualification from UC can open doors to the world, allowing registered teachers to teach their specialist age group or subject in a range of countries. You might also teach English in a non-English speaking country, and combine travel and personal development with career development.

A career that counts

Teachers make a measurable difference in children's lives, and share their skills and passion for learning and discovery with children and young adults who are just starting their learning journeys.

Starting salaries are higher than those of many other new graduates, and employment conditions are good, including generous holidays.

Learning for life

Qualified teachers working the sector are also eligible to apply for teacher study awards, which allow you to expand or update your skills while working or during paid or unpaid study breaks. Find out more.

Scholarships and funding

There are many scholarships available to students studying teacher education, including substantial TeachNZ scholarships. TeachNZ scholarships provide targeted funding to meet projected shortfalls in subjects and geographic areas.

UC also administers a large database of scholarships that you may be eligible for. Find out more about UC scholarships.
