Description

This course introduces students to a range of methods of sociological inquiry. These include both quantitative and qualitative research methods with a focus on life stories and survey research. The course offers students the opportunity to gain skills as social researchers. These include experience in research ethics, interviewing, analysis and survey design. By the end of the course students will have an understanding of the theoretical, practical and ethical considerations in social research. It is strongly recommended that students majoring in sociology take this course.

This course introduces students to some qualitative methods of sociological inquiry. These include life stories and focus group research. The course offers students the opportunity to gain skills as social researchers. These include experience in research ethics, interviewing (both one-to-one and group) and analysis. By the end of the course students will have an understanding of the theoretical, practical and ethical considerations in social research.

Prerequisites

30 points of SOCI including 15 points at 200 level; OR 30 points of SOCI or ANTH at 200 level; OR 60 points in related subjects including 30 points at 200 level with the approval of the Head of Department.
