Description

Linear algebra, systems of linear equations, vectors and matrices and their manipulation, statistics for gaming applications. Computation for quantitative modelling of object and environment orientation and the manipulation of dynamic systems in 3-dimensional space. Statistical analysis to assess game balance issues, such as the impact of in-game objects on in-game economies, balance of power, and user preference.

This course introduces the fundamentals of mathematics and statistics for game development. The topics covered are an introduction to linear algebra, coordinate systems and geometric primitives in game engines, game balancing, applications of mathematics in 3D graphics and real-time physics simulation. The practical aspect of this course will teach the students how to develop games using the Unreal Game Engine and using Microsoft Excel for statistical analyses.

Learning Outcomes

  • A student who successfully completes this course will:
  • Understand linear algebra and be able to apply the knowledge in the context of game
    development
  • Be able to work with and convert between different coordinate systems
  • Have developed an understanding of mathematics of geometric primitives
  • Learn and be able to apply statistics especially for game balancing
  • Have the ability to apply mathematics in 3D graphics and real-time physics simulation
  • Learn the basics of Unreal Game Engine and be able to develop games with it
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Excel for basic statistical analyses

Timetable Note

Two Lectures - Monday 16.00-17.00 (1 hr) and Tuesday 12.00-14.00 (2 hr), and one lab - Thursday 15.00-18.00 (3 hr)

The primary textbook is "3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development". The optional reading is "Game Engine Architecture".

The prerequisite for this course is PROD121 and 15 points of MATHS or STATS
