Description

This paper allows students to create substantial immersive experiences using techniques such as structured brainstorming, rapid prototyping (fail often, fail early), constructive critiquing, and iteration. Students will create several major works during the course of the paper, working in teams, formally presenting their ideas, and working with client constraints. Several technologies will be introduced, such as collaborative project management and tracking tools, code repositories, and presentation software.

In this course, students will design immersive experiences using techniques for game development such as structured brainstorming, sketching, rapid prototyping, constructive critiquing, testing and iteration. Students will create several works, in teams and individually, formally presenting their ideas, and working with client, user and context constraints. Technologies and processes will be introduced to support project management, progress tracking, collaborative development and presentation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will gain experience in applying techniques and methods for designing, prototyping and testing game ideas.
  • Students will gain experience in designing new game ideas to meet external specifications and requirements
  • Students will have experience working in a team to critique and iteratively improve game concepts through rapid prototyping, iteration and constructive critiquing
  • Students will become familiar with the use of a number of industry standard integrated game development tools and production pipelines
  • Students will be able to tailor presentations of game designs for the target audience
