Description

MUSA293 aims to further develop students' performance and rehearsal skills in one or more music ensembles ranging from large, such as orchestra (UC-CYO) or UC gamelan ensemble, to small ensembles such as three-piece contemporary bands or chamber groups.

The course aims to further develop students’ performance and rehearsal skills in one or more music ensembles ranging from large—such as orchestra (UC-CYO), Consortia, or UC Gamelan Ensemble—to small ensembles such as three-piece contemporary bands or chamber groups.  

Note that these ensembles comprise a mix of 100, 200 and 300 level performance students, all of whom demonstrate abilities in a range of instrumental and musical skills. In addition to their base set of skills, students will also demonstrate abilities and experience based upon their level of enrolment corresponding to early, intermediate and advanced stages of development.

Timetable Note

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:
• 48 hours attending rehearsals and Performance Workshops;
• 3 hours preparing for oral presentation;
• 24 hours dress rehearsal and concert performance; and
• 75 hours self-directed practice.

Assessment

• (30%) Rehearsal assessment:
• Prompt and regular attendance. If you have to miss a rehearsal, you need to let the ensemble/leader know of your absence in a timely manner.
• Evidence of preparing the material between rehearsals.
• Professional level of engagement with rehearsal process.

• (60%) Group assessment of at least four qualified performances—usually one per term. A qualified performance is one that is approved by the course coordinator beforehand. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure prior approval has been met. Please email the course coordinator or discuss in-person ASAP. It must be a performance that is documented by both audio and video for moderation purposes. If you are in UC-CYO, Consortia, or Gamelan ensemble, your 4 performance are automatically accounted for, unless you wish for some other smaller ensemble activity to count for your credit instead. Friday Lunchtime concerts and “Peer Playing” sessions during our Performance Workshop are excellent and convenient opportunities for this. Students are also encouraged to work with their composer classmates to perform new works. This is an exciting opportunity and will allow you to collaboratively gain experience in the creation process. Your performances will be assessed on the following:
• Technical performance skills (pitch, rhythm, articulation, voicing, etc.).
• Ensemble performance skills (balance, dynamics, communication, etc.).
• Projection, appropriate engagement with the audience.

• (10%) One 10-minute oral presentation. Your presentation time will be scheduled to commence near the end of Semester one, or two, during the Performance Workshop (Wednesday 5-6:30pm) at the Arts Centre Location Recital Room. Individual times will be announced by the third week of the first semester. You will be assessed on your:
• Demonstration of your knowledge of the ensemble repertoire you have played so far: What pieces did you play? Composers? Style? Era? What did you learn about the music?
• Earnest reflection of your involvement with the ensemble(s) you participated in. What where the rehearsals/performances like? What were some of the challenges, etc.
• Be prepared to answer questions regarding the above.

You are strongly encouraged to attend and participate in the weekly Performance Workshops, every Wednesday 5-6:30pm at the Arts Centre Location Recital Room.
