Description

Describe and analyse business management structures, theories and techniques, and provides an insight to the skills required to develop strategic management direction, solve organisational problems and encourage positive growth and productivity.

This course introduces management to Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) students. The course will cover business management structures, theories and techniques, and provides students with the insight, understanding and practical skills to develop strategic management direction and solve organisational problems and encourage positive growth and productivity.

By applying this advanced knowledge to their general business understanding the student will gain the ability to understand and manage the structures and demands of an organisation within their professional accounting career.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

1.  Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the role of management within organisations, and apply and evaluate different management theories*

2.  Explain and evaluate the management process within varying types of organisations and industries*

3.  Compare and contrast the knowledge of management theories to case studies *

4.  Communicate details of management theories, restrictions and applications in language appropriate to the audience, demonstrating an advanced understanding and engagement with the topic

5.  Critically evaluate current management practice in response to academic research

This demonstrates level 8 learning by integrating academic research and applied practice in a way that allows students to gain an understanding of the influence and potential of management theories and techniques in organisations and their processes.

Assessment

ASSESSMENT 1: REFLECTIVE JOURNALS x 3 (15%)

Reflective journal submission 1: Wednesday 10 May, 1pm (Week 3)
Reflective journal submission 2: Wednesday 31 May, 1pm (Week 6)
Reflective journal submission 3: Wednesday 21 June, 1pm (Week 9)

A reflective journal entry relating to the course material will be due before class in weeks 3, 6 and 9. Each reflective journal question will be set one week in advance. You will submit, through LEARN (as a word file attachment), a one page response to each of the reflective journal questions. Each reflective journal submission is worth 5% accumulating to a maximum of 15% over the duration of the assessment. Requirements concerning the reflective journals will be explained in class during week 1 and on the LEARN site. This assessment is designed to assess learning outcomes 1 and 2.

ASSESSMENT 2: CLASS AND ONLINE PARTICIPATION (20%)

At the end of the semester you will be given a grade for your participation (a) during in-class discussions (10%), and (b) in the online forum through the course LEARN site (10%). A grading schedule will be provided during the first week of class. This assessment is designed to assess learning outcomes 1 - 5.

ASSESSMENT 3: INDIVIDUAL ESSAY (30%)

Report due: Wednesday 07 June, 1pm (Week 7)

Your task in this assessment is to write an essay on the historical foundations of management and organisations. Specifically, your essay topic is to write a comparative essay on organisational management theories and discuss the attributes and deficiencies of each theory.  Your analysis should include examples of each theoretical model used by organisations in the private and/ or public sectors.  Then, identify one organisational management model that you would use if you were starting your own organisation.  Justify your reason(s) for selecting that particular model.      

In this essay, you will demonstrate your understanding of the history of management and organisation thought, an ability to critically analyse the organisational and management models, and the ability to source and write from academic material. This assessment is designed to assess learning outcomes 1 and 5.

ASSESSMENT 4: EXAM (35%)

Exam date: 28 June, 2017 (Week 10)

The final exam will consist of essays and short-answer questions. The final exam will examine lecture material, text and course readings covered in weeks 1-9. This assessment is designed to assess learning outcomes 1 - 5.
