A study of contemporary theory and practice in business development and entrepreneurship.
This course introduces students to contemporary theory and practice in business development and the wider field of entrepreneurship. It is integrative, enabling students to apply their knowledge of managerial accounting and marketing in the context of new and smaller businesses.
Programme Learning Goals:Graduates will be able to:Goal 1: Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of current theoretical concepts, frameworks and industry practice within the fields of business and management;Goal 2: Think logically, analytically and critically with respect to the academic and professional literature with the field of business and management;Goal 3: Plan and carry out independent research that demonstrates critical awareness of academic and professional issues in the fields of business and management;Goal 4: Synthesise information and create new perspectives resulting in new business opportunities.In terms of Learning Outcomes, this course will enable students to:1. Evaluate new venture opportunities and critique business plans.2. Understand growth and development in smaller businesses.3. Reflect upon the nature of entrepreneurship from differing perspectives.4. Enhance their creativity and understand how to develop new business ideas.

There is no prescribed text for this course. The intention is that each class be self-contained as possible. Lectures notes will be posted on the LEARN site, normally in advance of each class. Further readings and case studies will also be on the LEARN. There is no prescribed text. However, copies of Entrepreneurship – Theory, Process, Practice by Donald Kuratko are being held On Reserve at the Central Library. The chapter references in the Lecture Schedule are to this book.The Central Library holds a large number of other texts on business development and entrepreneurship that can substitute for the Kuratko text.
