Description

To provide an in-depth understanding of leadership theories and their application to practice.

The course introduces students to a range of leadership frameworks and models and applies them to contemporary examples of how to lead in a VUCA environment / context.

Students will not only learn about the theories underpinning effective leadership but will also be provided with practical tools to enhance their capability as a leader. This includes but not limited to:
• enhancing self awareness;
• improving optimism, resilience and emotional intelligence;
• building high performing teams;
• effective decision making; and
• navigating and leading change.

As part of the assessment participants will be required to:
1. Understand and critically analyse contemporary leadership concepts;
2. Critically analyse and evaluate the performance of a well known 21st Century leader;
3. Personally reflect on their own leadership drivers, values and capabilities culminating in the creation of a Personal Development Plan; and
4. Prepare a short presentation reflecting on the performance and leadership of a team they have been a part of.

Timetable Note

All learning content provided online via Learn.

Course material (readings, recordings, videos) loaded weekly (on Sunday prior) and will be supported by weekly tutorials, Q&A Sessions, online discussion forums and office hours (for 1 to 1 support).

Weekly Tutorial:  Thursdays 10 – 11am (Weeks 1- 5 & 7 – 11)
Q&A Session:      Fridays 10 – 11am (Weeks 1- 5 & 7 – 11)

Assessment

Assessment 1: Leadership Module Learn Quizzes 20%
Online learn quizzes to examine your knowledge, understanding and application of course, lecture and readings content for each of the five learning modules covered in this paper. Quizzes will be untimed and will consist of 10 multi choice questions.

Assessment 2: Leadership - Case Study 30% (Due: 24th June)
This assignment requires you to evaluate and critically analyse the leadership of a 21st century leader. (1000 words)

Assessment 3: Self Leadership – Reflection 30% (Due: 15th July)
Reflect on your own leadership values, purpose and capabilities (1000 words).    

Assessment 4: Team Leadership – Presentation 20% (Due:  5th August)
Reflect and analyse the team dynamics and functioning of a team you have either led or been a member of, and suggest leadership actions that could improve its function.  Communicate the reflections, findings and suggestions in a short and concise 5-minute video.  

All assessments are individual assessments (i.e. there are no team / group assignments for this paper). Further details of each assessment are available in the Assessment Guidelines

A comprehensive range of literature will be supplied in electronic form on the Learn site.  The readings listed each week should be read in preparation for that week’s lecture / discussion.
