In this capstone course of the Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching we will study the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. The course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to set up, conduct, and report on (action) research into an aspect of teaching and learning in the tertiary context. You are encouraged to do a research project based on your own teaching practice, so you can use the results to inform further development of your teaching. The foci of the course are on formulating an educational research question, developing the study design and methodology, and human ethics considerations.
Overview and formatHEDN604 is the capstone course of the PGCert and aims to provide participants with the tools and experience to engage in, and report on, (action) research into an aspect of teaching and learning in the tertiary context (scholarship of tertiary teaching and learning). In the first half of the course we will collaboratively focus on formulating educational (action) research questions, research design, methodology, and ethical considerations. In the second half of the course you will work, individually or in teams, on your own research projects.
Course outcomesParticipants will be able to;1. Design and implement an (action) research project in tertiary education.2. Evaluate the ethical implications of the research design and methodology, and apply principles of ethics to minimise impact on research participants, in particular issues around power differentials, coercion, informed consent, and data / participant confidentiality.3. Use ethical ways to gather data and use appropriate methods to analyse the data.Programme outcomesParticipants will be able to;1. Critically reflect on and apply theory and practice in personal tertiary teaching practice.2. Become part of a community of practice of tertiary teachers in which participants can discuss and provide / receive critical feedback on tertiary teaching and learning matters.

Note: Because of the limited time available in the semester and the requirement to obtain ethics approval before collecting data, there is NO expectation that you will produce a full research output at the peer-review level. If you are able to collect and analyse data, that is perfectly fine, but it is equally acceptable for your final output to be a detailed plan to set up, run, and analyse a project, and give some indication on how the results might be used to inform teaching and learning, for you, your department, etc. In the past, most participants have taken this latter route, and produced in essence a research project that could be picked up by an honours or master student.Note: All assessments need to receive a passing grade in order to receive a pass for the course Tentative weekly schedule(Note: In my experience, the research projects of the participants operate on different time lines, hence the “tentative”)Week Date Topic1.
